Definitely enjoyed Desai's writing, the characters, and storyline, but I think I've OD'd on Great Indian Novel candidates (see A Fine Balance)...
In early 2002, six weeks after the fall of the Taliban, the author crossed Afghanistan -- from Herat to Kabul -- by foot. The book provides a glimpse into a culture that remains largely opaque to nearly all westerners, despite five years and counting of American military presence and media coverage. Highly recommended -- I now read any news about Afghanistan with new eyes.
